{February 12, 2007}   St Kilda’s Festival 2007

st kilda’s festival was a week long event that culminates at festival day on 11 february. festival day was a massive event that stretch from catani gardens to the end of acland street with 38 highlighted venues in the programme booklet. what i liked about the festival was the variety of activities. the festival was not restricted to mobile theme parks and food stalls, it also included many art galleries, sporting events and 6 performance stages. police and security staff were often in sight and transportation to and from the event was smooth thanks to yarra trams for increasing the frequency of trams. kudos to the festival organisers!

the weather was fantastic. clear blue skies and cool winds. from time to time, the wind got too strong for comfort. at the st kilda pier, cw and i felt being pushed by the wind. we could have been blown away if we didn’t secure our footing. winds of up to 100km/h were raging across victoria. perhaps that was why kiteboarding was cancelled at the festival.

although there were heaps of people, it didn’t feel uncomfortably congested because the various venues were sufficiently spaced out and people were constantly on the move. crowds also contribute to the atmosphere. it is easier to have a good time when you see all these other people also have a great time.

i’ve observed that it doesn’t take australians to do so. all they need is usually a green lawn and some sunshine, nothing sensational. they also seem to go about their way more independently than singaporeans. i find that people at home need to be wowed by the lastest, fastest, biggest, loudest, est-est. they also have a very short attention span, easily bored and demanding.

i digress. anyway, summer in melbourne is just half-way through. there is some event, festival or other on most weekends. even if there isn’t, a walk along the many gardens, parks and water fronts will be a nice way to spend the weekend.

coming up in the next few weeks:

weekend of 17th – 18th february – chinese new year festivities

weekend of 24th – 25th february – herring island summer arts festival

weekend of 4th march – sydney road street party

weekend of 10-11th march – moomba waterfest

weekend of 18th march – melbourne tram ways band at wattle park

weekend of 24th -25 march – melbourne 2007 (fina) festival
