{November 7, 2010}   At the Singapore Botanic Gardens with the Kids

no, not my kids – my 5 year old niece and 2 year old nephew.

since my sister and her family returned from a year long overseas posting to san diego, today was the first time i had really got to hang out with them outdoors. i’m very pleased to say that the kids do not live a sedentary childhood of tv and enrichment courses. the kids get to marvel at the most ordinary things and enjoy what the urban and cultivated environment has to offer both locally and overseas.

today we went to the singapore botanic gardens for breakfast and to walk around a bit. the kids were fascinated with the “humongous fish” as my precocious nephew calls the koi and so most of the time was spent feeding the fish with fish food from a dispenser.

a new feature of the singapore botanic gardens is the botany centre. it is a library, a research centre as well as a gift shop. the air conditioning was a welcomed respite from the heat.

the bookshelves are made of corrugated cardboards, i’m guessing from recycled material.

the kids have been to the singapore botanic gardens several times. in fact, just before they left for the overseas posting, my niece requested to have a picnic in the park with her friends for her birthday. that time, my nephew was still too young to run about.

see how they have grown.
